Hospice

Hospice

When end-of-life care becomes necessary, the team at Stillwater Medical works to provide a family-centered approach with the freedom to make choices regarding the patient’s care and quality of life. Our goal is to relieve discomfort and stress while providing spiritual and grief support for patients and caregivers. Karman Legacy Hospice is one of Oklahoma’s oldest hospice services and has offered hospice services prior to there being a formal hospice program.

Our Services

  • Learn About Our Services

During this difficult time, we understand how important it is to choose a hospice provider with a qualified team, delivering compassionate and comforting patient care and a plan tailored specifically to your loved one.

  • RN Coordinated Care

We offer a Hospice Experience Registered Nurse to coordinate care and services that are provided by a team of RNs and LPNs. Services may include nursing assessments, medication coordination, teaching, medication administration, pain management, and continuous monitoring of multiple body systems.

  • Physician/Nurse Practitioner Care

We offer the services of a Physician or Nurse Practitioner who will assess our patients periodically as planned by hospice and who is always available to provide medical interventions for patient needs.

  • Social Worker Services

Our social workers provide counseling services and can also be a valuable asset to assist patients/family members with tapping into valuable resources from public and private agencies as available to those in need.

  • CHHA/Homemakers

A Certified Home Health Aide (CHHA) is available to assist with the personal care needs of our patients (bathing and skincare, to name a few), and we offer Homemaker services to help with household tasks that support our patients’ care.

  • Medication

We cover medications for clients with no copay charges for all medications related to the terminal illness for which hospice services have been certified.

  • DME (Durable Medical Equipment)

We provide equipment in the home to meet the needs of the patient to provide as much assistance with mobility as possible in the home environment, considering that the home may be a nursing facility, assisted living facility, or a private residence.

We also offer a variety of services to our patients that include gentle touch services from a licensed massage therapist, respite care for family members and general inpatient services through Stillwater Medical to manage crises.

  • Volunteers

Our hospice volunteers enhance the lives of our patients and family members.

We offer services by trained volunteers that include patient care services; reading to a patient, playing cards, playing checkers, socialization in general. Quilting for a patient, baking cookies, pet therapy, or life review.

Office-centered volunteer roles such as filing, answering the phone, preparing reports or other meaningful tasks help staff spend more time focusing on the patient care.

If you have a talent and would like to give a little bit of your time to a very worthy cause, call our Volunteer Coordinator and we will find the position that is right for you.

Hospices depend on their volunteers. Without the efforts of volunteers, hospices could not continue their important work. Patients and families depend on hospice care. No one else provides the kind of services that hospice does. By attending to the needs of both the patients and their loved ones, hospice care can be a huge comfort for the entire family.

Hospice Volunteers serve in many ways.

    • Keep the patient company
    • Listen to concerns
    • Be a support person
    • Read aloud
    • Help staff with office work and other behind-the-scenes tasks

Duties will vary depending on the patient’s and family’s needs as well as what the volunteer is able and comfortable doing.

    Minimum Volunteer Requirements

The requirements for hospice volunteers have been put together by combining state regulations with those of Stillwater Medical.

Volunteers are required to complete 12 hours of well-rounded self-directed core training and to attend at least three in-services a year. In-services are similar to most organization meetings: a discussion topic and/or speaker, announcements, and food. Additional training is required for volunteers who wish to learn more about bereavement and how to help families with the grief they experience after losing a loved one. Confidentiality forms, background checks, fingerprinting, and inoculations are also required for those who wish to volunteer. All volunteers are invited to participate in special events and parties. We ask our volunteers to do as much—or as little—as they can.
