Becker’s Health Review ranked Stillwater Medical Center among the top 418 hospitals for nurse communication, highlighting the hospital’s commitment to exceptional patient care through clear and compassionate communication.

Patient survey data provided via the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems was the basis of this elite recognition. The nurse communication ranking summarizes how well patients feel that their nurses explained things clearly, listened carefully to the patient, and treated the patient with courtesy and respect.

Dawn Kregel, the newly appointed Chief Nursing Officer at Stillwater Medical, shared her insights on this remarkable accomplishment, which reflects the hard work and dedication of its nursing staff.

“This award truly underscores the importance of effective communication in patient care,” she said. “Clear communication is vital as it ensures patients understand their treatment plans, medications and overall care, leading to better health outcomes.”

Nurses play a crucial role in the hospital’s overall performance, acting as the backbone of patient care. With more than 500 staff, nursing is the largest workforce at Stillwater Medical Center.

“People don’t always realize the hard work, both physical and mental, that goes into caring for others,” Kregel remarked. “We care for the patient and their family, and patient-centered care is a strong focus in this community.”

Kregel, who began her career as an intensive care nurse, now coordinates nurses across various departments to maintain consistency in care. Kregel’s journey at Stillwater Medical began in April when she joined as interim Chief Nursing Officer.

“After 90 days, I realized this wasn’t just a temporary job,” she said. “I saw myself living here and being part of this positive culture. It’s a place where someone with my experience wants to be and carry on the values and principles we uphold.”

Kregel was drawn to the strong culture of care that’s evident from the bedside all the way up to the executive leadership level. It’s a culture built upon decades of service and, as the hospital looks to fill its critical need for nurses, they’re focusing on former exemplary employees.

“The Coming Home campaign is a targeted recruitment effort to reach out to 100 former employees, and remind them of the positive culture and working environment here. We’re already seeing people who left during the pandemic return,” Kregel said.

As Stillwater Medical continues to excel in nurse communication and patient care, the hospital looks forward to welcoming back former staff through the Coming Home program, ensuring a brighter future for both patients and care providers.
