Screening Guidelines

  • When Should You Get A Mammogram?

Mammograms are the best tool we have to-date for detecting breast cancer early. Our physicians recommend that all women, age 40 and older, as well as women at high risk of breast cancer, get routine screening mammograms. To protect from a late diagnosis, we encourage the following guidelines:

    • All women: Know how your breasts normally look and feel, and report and changes promptly to your health care provider.
    • Women in their 20s and 30s: Regular breast exams by a physician
    • Women who are 40+: Annual mammogram and clinical breast exam. Depending on risk factors and family history, recommendations for women 40-45 may vary; be sure to talk to your healthcare provider.
    • Women at higher risk: Due to family history, genetic tendencies, or other factors, women at a higher risk should receive more frequent screenings, screenings starting at an earlier age, or receive different kinds of tests. Talk to your doctor to find out if you fall into this category

What to Expect

  • Diagnostic Mammograms

If your screening mammogram shows an area of concern, your doctor may recommend a more detailed x-ray of your breast. This is called a diagnostic mammogram. This type of mammography is used to investigate:

    • Asymmetry of breast tissue in men
    • Breast pain
    • Changes in breast size or shape
    • Lumps
    • Nipple discharge
    • Skin thickening

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, make an appointment with your primary care provider to receive the appropriate follow-up care.
