Stillwater, OK - Stillwater Medical Center is pleased to announce the addition of digital mammography to their line of services.  A new clinic, called Women First, is now open and ready to serve the women of north central Oklahoma. Women First is a division of Stillwater Medical Center and is owned and operated in cooperation with local physicians dedicated to women’s health. It is located on the first floor of the Stillwater Medical Professional Building at 1411 West 7th, just behind SMC.

“The new digital system allows us to offer our patients state-of-the-art mammograms that are faster and easier than ever before,” said Jerry Moeller, CEO.  “And, it gives our referring physicians extremely accurate images that help detect and diagnose breast cancer.”

In Oklahoma, 2500 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year.  Mammograms are among the best early detection methods, yet 13 million US women 40 years of age or older have never had a mammogram, according to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc. The goal of Women First is to provide women a convenient and comfortable environment for mammography services.

“This digital technology will provide both high-precision accuracy and increased ease of use for our patients,” said Moeller.  “Providing the best diagnostic equipment possible to patients is a vital step toward good preventative health and one we take very seriously.

According to Dr. Phillip Russell, Radiologist, there are many advantages to a digital mammography system.

“The images are clear and easier to evaluate. It offers a better view of the breast, especially near the skin line and chest wall, and there is some increased sensitivity in women with dense breast tissue,” said Russell.  “The digital image is ready to view within 10 seconds – there is no longer a wait for films to be developed to be sure the images are usable.”

Dr. Russell concluded by explaining that digital mammograms take as little as half the time of film.  And if a second opinion is needed, the new system has the ability to send images electronically to a consulting physician.

Patients can schedule their screening mammogram by calling Stillwater Medical Center’s Central Registration line at (405) 742-5622.
